Settling in the colonies

Settling on Nevis was not easy. It was quickly realised that establishing permanent colonies depended not only on warriors, sailors and privateers, but farmers, labourers and craftsmen and women too.

Without women there would be no children; without children there would be no future generations. The hardships were legion: virgin forests, unworked lands, hurricanes, enemy invasions, earthquakes, successive epidemics.
